Impressive ecological sailboat.
French startup Syroco expects its Moonshot I boat to soon surpass the -knot mark within the next year, according to the Robb Report. To do this, the firm is aiming for some pretty ambitious achievements.
“Staying true to Syroco's pioneering spirit and thirst for discovery, research has already made it possible to question the fundamental paradigms of naval architecture. Because only research, together with excellence in commitment and execution, can make Moonshot Challenges possible, the pioneering achievements that Syroco aims for,” states the Syroco website.
The firm has the right leadership to achieve this noble goal. Syroco co-founder Alexandre Caizergues is the two-time Sailing Speed World Record breaker (, ), four-time Kite Speed World Champion (, , , ) and the curr C Level Executive List ent Kite Speed Record holder. at km/h.
Caizergues and his partner, Yves de Montcheuil, used a team of sailors, naval architects and even helicopter industry specialists to design their new eco-friendly sailboat in an attempt to make it as safe as it is efficient and fast. The end result is a -foot-long sail-combined kite that seats two people.
Moonshot I is an eco-friendly sailboat that uses foils to stay connected to the water and kites to provide propulsion. However, the construction of the boat was not without complications.
Engineers had to deal with cavitation (air bubbles that build up as the blades move faster) at speeds no sailboat had reached before. They had to find a shape of foil that could operate at both high and low speed to use the power of cavitation instead of fighting it.
To achieve this, they designed foils that use “supercavitation” most commonly found in torpedoes and some propellers. Now, Syroco plans to use his innovations to help shipbuilders make more efficient and environmentally friendly hulls as it prepares to break speed records with Moonshot I, which it hopes to do next year.
