The Deaths of the Apostles copied from:
www.icnc.org/scratchpad/a133.htm
Matthew suffered martyrdom in Ethopia, killed by a sword wound.
Mark died in Alexandria, Egypt, dragged by horses through the streets until he was dead.
Luke was hanged in Greece as a result of his tremendous preaching to the lost.
John was boiled in a huge basin of boiling oil during a wave of persecution in Rome. However, he was miraculously delivered from death. John was then sentenced to the mines on the prison island of Patmos where he wrote his prophetic Book of Revelation. The Apostle John was later freed and returned to serve as a bishop in modern Turkey. He died an old man, the only Apostle to die peacefully.
-----------------
Notice John was the only one to die peacefully of the Gospel writers. John was also the one whose head lay on Jesus' breast making his thoughts closest to Jesus' heart. So while I believe it is of God to memorize at least one Gospel, and you are free to chose any of the 4, I personally choose John.
By listening to all four Gospels repeated during the day when I am in my old man seeking and working on ways to make money, I find John the most peaceful with least condemnation which allows me to receive it instead of react against it which my old man does against the others, even though I know they are also the Gospel.
The others are necessary, Matthew essential, to show Paul is least in the Kingdom, but the one to follow to the hight of Jesus' absolute perfection and evidently by John's overcoming the boiling oil and peaceful death the best one for peaceful preaching is John.
Paul's death befits his bottom of the Kingdom Christianity:
-----------------
Paul [endured a lengthy imprisonment,] was tortured and then beheaded by the evil Emperor Nero at Rome in A.D. 67.
