At the current time the symbol is that of a Celtic Cross. The Cross erected in the Celtic regions by the Apostles. Considering its ancient meaning to Christianity, it has been chosen as our symbol. More info can be found here : en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celtic_cross#section_2
